Fencing

For my last blog I am going to talk about something that I have wanted to do for a while, but never had the chance until I got to Trinity. That Thing is fencing. Fencing has always intrigued me, but I have never found any place near where I live to try it. When I got to Trinity I realized that fencing was offered as a course. So naturally I signed up. My only experience with a sword was all the videogames and movies I have seen where the main character wields a blade to cut down enemies or something. When I got to the class for the first time all I wanted to do was use a sword, but unfortunately for the first few classes we had to learn prober footwork. No sword. As the classes dragged on the momentous day finally arrived when I got to use my first sword. Awesome. I must say, I was a natural with a blade. The classes only got better from there. All we would do was stab each other to our hearts content, and every once and a while the coach would throw in a new technique. We would then make fools of ourselves by trying to mime our coach. I have to say, fencing is one of the best things I have tried here at Trinity University.

Trips off campus

While Trinity has a wide variety of different opportunities on campus, there is still so much to do off campus. So in this entry I will be talking about some of the recent exploits my friends and I have had off campus. Starting Friday we went to a nearby park which name I cannot remember for the life of me. This park was only five minutes away and was a perfect place to play a pickup game of football or Ultimate Frisbee. We brought a stereo and a long board to make the day at the park even more enjoyable. The next day my friends and I took a trip to the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. The Riverwalk is something I feel that every Trinity student should visit at some point. It is an extremely beautiful attraction filled with vibrant shops and restaurant. When we went there on Saturday we went to a Mexican grille called the Iron Cactus. While at the Iron Cactus we tried some generic Mexican food, but it was still tons of fun. So when you are sitting in your dorm room, and don’t know what to do, look around San Antonio and you will most likely find some awesome activity to do.

Muddy Gras

This weekend I traveled with the rest of the Ultimate team to Baton Rouge to play in a Mardi Gras Tournament. The car ride was about eight and a half hours long and all we did was listen to hip hop mash-ups. On Friday we went to a party thrown by the associations that were hosting the tournament. The party was a bit lame but I got to meet some cool people from other schools around the country. The next day we had to get up and get to the fields by seven in the morning. Everyone was tired and exhausted by the drive the day before. That morning there was water and frost all across the fields. After about ten minutes the fields were covered in nothing but mud. We lost our first two games because we had no idea how to run or play in these conditions. After a while and a few inspirational pep talks by our coach we came back and won our last two games of the day. By the end of the day we were covered head to toe in mud and dirt. The next day we had one chance to get into a championship bracket. We played extremely hard against a team better than us and even though we lost by only one point we left the tournament happy.

Rushing and the Pikes

Ok so for this blog post I want to talk about the rush process here at Trinity University. Starting last semester I decided to rush a fraternity. Hang on rewind, I have wanted to be part of a fraternity ever since I visited my Dad’s college and met his frat brothers. So to correct myself, last semester I begin the process of rush, something I have wanted to do for a long while. When I started rushing I decided to check out a few frats and see which groups of guys I connected with. Most of the guys I met were really nice, with some exceptions of the really really creepy guys. Now I am going to diverge for a second and say that the rush process for the guys is significantly simpler than anything the girls had to go through for sororities. The sororities are extremely intense about their rush, with all their rush dates and what not. I mean they probably had four times as many events as I had. Well anyway after a while I decided to rush only one fraternity, the Pikes. I chose this group because I felt that I connected with the guys the best and that I could see myself in this fraternity. Anyone who takes part in rush is open to a wide variety of events and is able to get to know many new people. While rushing the Pikes my friends and I went to a giant laser tag night, several barbeques, and went to see a minor league hockey game. Last Monday my friends and I were invited to an invitation only blue chip dinner, where the Pikes told us about their brotherhood and about what they expected from us if we joined. Even if you do not want to join a fraternity I still would suggest rush because if you don’t, you may miss out on many new opportunities and may miss out on meeting some really interesting people.
